Mardi Gras Charity Gala at Fairmont Bab al Bahr

The Italian Cultural Association (CICER) is organising a charity Carnival Gala on Thursday the 27th of February in the Grand Ballroom of the Fairmont Bab Al Bahr Hotel.
The party will start at 7pm and it is open to guests from all over the world: anyone who likes Italian food and culture is welcome to join!

The entry ticket is 350 AED – free for children younger than 5 years old and 50% discount for children between 5 and 12 years of age.
The fee includes a cocktail, two bottles of wine for each table, and a buffet dinner featuring Italian delicacies, such as seafood salad, Mediterranean starters, fish and meat barbecue, lasagne and more. Children will have a dedicated buffet and entertainers will also be available.
A DJ will provide the tunes for those who like dancing, and a charity raffle will be held, to help two great causes: Smile for Hope – which supports Nepalese children in their fight against cancer, and Animal Action – which helps abandoned animals in the UAE.

Fancy dress is not mandatory, but encouraged.

Only 200 places are available, so those interested need to book with Anna (050 622 32 58) or Lucia (050 642 25 61) – ideally before the 25th of February.

Vasa Vasa – Italian ice cream parlour

The 500g take away box.

Where in Abu Dhabi:
Al Muneera Beach Front, Al Raha Beach
Tel: 02 555 6484

What some people might not know is that the Al Muneera beach front, on Al Raha Beach, is open to everyone, not only the residents of the complex.

Yes, the beach access is private, so unless you live in one of the buildings around it you can’t walk on the sand or go swimming, but anyone is free to stay in the plaza and eat at the many restaurants and cafes there, which all have outdoor seating.

It’s so lovely to sit in the sea breeze and enjoy the beautiful view on Yas Island, with the Yas Viceroy Hotel all lit by thousands LED lights, and it’s so easy, thanks to a massive underground visitors parking just a few steps away.

One of the many places that can be enjoyed during this lovely winter season (I never experienced a December with temperatures around 27C!) is the Italian ice cream parlour Vasa Vasa. ‘Vasare’ comes from the Sicilian dialect and means ‘Kissing’.
Tucked away in the right corner of the plaza, this ice cream parlour is a real gem.

Not only the ice cream is delicious, but they also have unique flavours, which you can’t find easily around, such as ‘cassata’, a typical Sicilian dessert originally made with candy fruit and ricotta cheese, or Gianduia, which is chocolate with hazelnuts.
They also sell sorbets and a small selection of pastries, cakes and biscuits, all home-made following Italian recipes.
Coffee is also available, especially real Italian ‘espresso’.

We have been there a few times already and we always found helpful staff and irresistible ice cream, which can be eaten straight away or brought home in a take-away box, which apparently keeps it cold for up to 30 minutes.
Next time we fancy Italian ice cream, we know where to go!

Olive Garden – Italian Restaurant

Smoked mozzarella fonduta!

Where in Abu Dhabi:
Al Wahda Mall – Third Floor (Mall Extension)
Tel : 02-643-7026

I had arrived from Dubai after a long bus journey, and W came to pick me up at Al Wahda Mall. I was starving and exhausted and in need of serious comfort food.
We decided to try Olive Garden, as we had heard good things about it: it was a great choice!

First of all, the staff was really friendly and patient, even if it took me forever to choose what I wanted. It’s harder when you are really hungry! Also, the menu has plenty of choices, making it really difficult to decide.

We decided to go for the unlimited breadsticks – unlimited soup (or salad) option. Yes, you read it right. Unlimited! As long as you order a main course each, you can have all-you-can-eat starters.

Zuppa Toscana.

Yummy breadsticks.

I choose a minestrone (fresh vegetables, beans and pasta in a light tomato broth) and W chose the Zuppa Toscana (spicy sausage, russet potatoes and cavolo greens in a creamy broth). Delicious!

And yes, even if it was unlimited, we had only one soup each, but we kept the breadsticks coming and they were so yummy!

As a main, I ordered the Ziti al forno, a pasta with a five cheeses and tomato marinara sauce.
W ordered a Tour of Italy, basically three mains in one: homemade lasagna, lightly breaded chicken parmigiana and creamy fettuccine Alfredo. We also had a smoked mozzarella fonduta (I told you we were hungry!) and some non-alcoholic fruity drinks – which were also unlimited.

As you can easily imagine, we were absolutely stuffed. And happy! Delicious Italian food + the word ‘unlimited’ + very friendly and helpful staff made for a lovely evening!

Spaccanapoli – Italian Restaurant

The 1/2 meter pizza is already massive! Pictured: half Americana and half Margherita.

Inside Crowne Plaza Hotel, Hamdan Street
Al Markaziyah – Abu Dhabi
Tel: +971 (0) 2 6166261

Tip for drivers: Just behind the Crowne Plaza Hotel, parallel to Hamdan Street and close to the back entrance of the hotel, there is a big underground parking that costs only 2 AED per hour.
Parking there, we usually have to get into the hotel from the secondary door instead than the main entrance, but it is very handy when we want to drive instead than getting a taxi.

Home of the city-famous ‘pizza by the meter’, Spaccanapoli is a favourite for many Expats living in Abu Dhabi, and not only Italian ones.
Always busy and buzzing with people, we like this restaurant very much, and we ate here many times.
Spaccanapoli is inside the Crowne Plaza Hotel, and serves a wide range of Italian food.

Refreshing fruit drinks.

Delicious soup.

Yummy lasagne.

All their food is lovely, with a special mention for their desserts: the Tiramisu is truly mouthwatering!

If we order dinner between 4pm and 7pm, we can get 50% discount on our bill, hence it is advised to arrive early!
If we don’t fancy choosing from the menu, every Monday, from 6pm to 11pm, there is also the chance to choose an all-you-can-eat buffet of cheeses, antipasti and wine.
From pasta to pizza, from cheese to bread, this Italian eatery has something for everyone, and we will keep coming back for more.

  • Why did we like it?

– Staff at the mall were very friendly and the order was ready in less than 10 min.
– Everything was really yummy. We both enjoyed it very much. The mango and blue cheese combination in the salad was a bit quirky but that was expected!
– The fact that they packed the food not only with disposable cutlery and napkins but also with a lot of tiny containers with grated cheese, chilli flakes and salad dressing was really nice. They also added extra bread in one of the spaghetti.

Yummy Take Away: Trattoria Olivella

– Pizza Texicana (BBQ Sauce, Grilled Chicken, Mozzarella, Jalapenos, Red Onion)
