Restronaut – social dining platform coming tomorrow to Abu Dhabi.

(screenshot © Restronaut)

(screenshot © Restronaut)

Let’s face it: meeting new people in your adult years is always a bit awkward.
Gone are the days where you could just walk up to someone at the park and ask if they want to play with you!

I mean, you can still do it, but either you get a friend for life, or you get murdered – 50/50 chance.

If approaching strangers in Khalifa park is not your idea of fun, you might want to take a look at Restronaut, a social dining website that aims to connect people with similar interests over dinner.

It is easy enough: someone starts a table in a nice restaurant, shares the menu and a theme to the evening, such as an obsession for Twitter (no, I am not making this up) or a passion for Jessica Fletcher’s fashion (yes, I am making this up – but I wish I wasn’t).

If you think that you might enjoy the conversation, you join the table, pre-pay your dinner through a safe online payment method, and voilà: you are good to go, ready to meet new friends.

Now, before y’all start screaming and say “but it is in Dubai!”, hear me out: yes, most of their dinners are based in Dubai, but tomorrow night – Tuesday 20th May – they have one in Abu Dhabi, even though it is for ladies only, and apparently they are planning to expand over here, so hopefully more dinners will come soon.

Tomorrow night’s dinner calls for business ladies in the UAE: there are still a few places left as we write, and it is at Koi, which is a really lovely restaurant. (Note to self: write review for Koi).

Restronaut seems like a fun idea to me, so I hope to see more of their dinners in the capital!

Saving money:10% discount on the Entertainer books!

(Photo: © Entertainer )

I have already written about the Entertainer book and how much we like it, as it saves us a lot of money and also gives us the chance to try new places we would not necessarily know about.

Now I have another reason to be happy!
The new Entertainer Abu Dhabi Body 2014/2015 has also been released and it is available for purchase, both in its mobile and paper version.

But things just get better: the amazing guys at the Entertainer HQ have been so kind to give us an EXCLUSIVE promo code to share with all Abu Dhabi Days Blog’s readers!

Entering code ADDBLOG10 on check-out you can enjoy a 10% discount that can be used when purchasing the Entertainer Abu Dhabi Body 2014/2015 AS WELL AS the classic Entertainer Abu Dhabi 2014 and all other Entertainer products!

This 10% discount code is valid until the end of June 2014 only, so, if you are reading this, just head to the official website, enter the discount code for the book(s) you want and enjoy a world of half-price pampering, for both men and women, as well as restaurants, water parks, dhow cruises, desert safaris and more!

ent2

Me browsing my newly downloaded Entertainer Body app!!

Something interesting that I also discovered, is that, with the beauty book, you don’t need to use both vouchers on the same day.

I explain: you have found an amazing Peruvian Mummy Wrap Hot Stone Massage (!) that you just know will leave you feeling amazing but your SO is not keen to accompany you, your BFF could not make it or… you just simply want to keep all the goodies for yourself: well, it is not a problem!

You can do a first paid treatment and then use the free second one on a subsequent date. Just make sure to clearly arrange this with the reception of your chosen Spa, and if they ask questions, you can show them how this possibility is clearly stated on the Entertainer website here.

The Abu Dhabi beauty book is valid until the 31st of March 2015, and features over 300 vouchers with a combined value of up to 90,000 AED worth of savings (that is 14,000 pounds!!), whilst if you want to know more about the classic Entertainer book, just read our old blog post about it or head to the official website.

And if you find an amazing Spa/Salon that you think would be worth a review, please let us know. We always love a bit of pampering!

SPORT
Try your golfing skills at one of the many golf clubs around town: if the temperatures are too high for you and you don’t fancy the early morning slot (many courses open at 6AM), you can always go for the floodlit academy courses: we usually go to Yas Links and take the last slot of the day, at 9PM. And if you – like us – don’t really know your wood from your iron, you can always do an intensive golf class.

Geocaching in the UAE: modern day treasure hunting.

46637_1476114977055_79238_n

Geocaching can be a familiar term to many, but for those who have never heard of it, I thought it was worth writing a post about it, as it is really an incredibly fun thing to do.

If you have no idea what I am talking about, the official website has a useful and straightforward geocaching 101 video and FAQ.

The bottom line is: ‘geocaches’ (or simply ‘caches’) are small containers of various sizes (usually on the small side) which contain ‘treasures’ (of course, in a broad sense of the term).
Some are hard to find because disguised as wooden logs or simply really tiny; others are bigger, but sometimes hidden so well that you will really struggle (yes, it did happen to us).
See below for an example of various geocaching containers we have personally found, back in the UK.

geo2

Tupperware!

geo6

A micro-cache.

geo4

geo3

A film container…

geo1

This was another big one!

These containers are distributed all over the world. Literally. There are over 2 million people hiding and seeking ‘geocaches’ on the planet in this precise moment!

Each container is logged (by the person who hides it) on the official geocaching website with satellite coordinates, so that anyone around the world can find it again (and re-hide it after).

Usually the containers are hidden in spots of natural beauty or of some sort of cultural interest, so that people can enjoy the outdoors as well as playing the game.

One of the main rules of geocaching is that you should not remove/move the containers from their location: usually you open them, sign your name in the provided logbook (which can be just a roll of paper) and that’s it, you put them back: the fun part is the search, not really the container itself.

Bigger containers might have several objects in them, so the main rule in this case is that if you take one item out, you must replace it with something else. After this, you just log everything online and move to the next search!

It might sound complicated, but it is basically treasure hunting done with the help of modern technology. It is really great fun!!

We have a little bit of geocaching experience, but we are keen on starting again in the UAE, as we never geocached over here before.
There are so many geocaches just around Abu Dhabi! (See map’s screenshot below!)

As useful starting point, apart from the official website, I also found this UAE Facebook group.

To get started, in my opinion, it is easier to download the app than starting from the website: the app is much more straightforward, as it tracks your position istantly and simply tells you which caches you have around, so that you can start straight away.

Another advice – from personal experience: if you decide to start geocaching it is a good idea to invest in a cable to charge your mobile phone in the car, if you don’t have one already: using the geocache app is great but it is horrible when your battery dies just meters from the goal!

Joining the fun is totally free (unless you want premium perks) and we can’t wait to start again!

Family Mart – local superstore

Dinnerware galore

Even though there is no doubt that going to one of the many big shopping malls in Abu Dhabi will see you sorted with everything you need, I think it is also good to support local shops – also because sometimes they hide more than a bargain and a few unique pieces.

I have already written about Abdul Karim, the wonderful shop inside Mina Centre.

Family Mart is similar, as it has a lot of the same tableware ranges, but I would classify it as a ‘superstore’ because it also sells a lot of other items, such as beauty products, make up, clothing, small furniture… you name it.

I could not find an official website for this store, but here is a map. In any case, it is easy to find as it stands right next to the big Toy’s R Us and Ace Hardware stores, sort-of in the same block as Royal Furniture, on Mina Port.

I bought several make up products here – you can get lovely nail polish which is of great quality and costs only a few AED, and of course many baking/cooking tools.

Something I particularly like of this shop is the extensive range of dinnerware and glassware. They also literally have everything you might need for your home, from barbecue tools to small appliances, plus disposable glasses and trays in all the shapes and sizes you can imagine – just perfect for a party. They also have a lot of Arabic coffee pots, traditional coffee sets and other local items. I just love this shop!
